The first mention of the word sin in the Bible is found in Genesis 4:5-7. This is the story of Cain killing his brother Abel. Cain was upset because God accepted Abel’s offering, but not his. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
But Cain did not listen to God’s warning. Instead, he opened the door to sin and Satan and killed his own brother. As a result he was cursed and cast out of the presence of God.
And the same is true for us. Every moment of every day, sin is crouching at our door, waiting for an open door into our lives. Either we master sin, or sin will master us.
